Siemens Smart Infrastructure has partnered with CPFL Energia, one of Brazil’s largest energy distributor in a smart meters project to digitises the country’s electricity sector.
The plan, one of the most ambitious of its kind in Brazil so far, involves replacing 1.6 million conventional electricity meters with smart meters project in São Paulo by 2029.
The company serves 10.7 million customers in 687 municipalities. This new technology will improve the quality and transparency of electricity utilization, improving efficiency in the sector, it was assumed.
Improved management of power supply disruptions and tracking power consumption by consumers to motivate energy use that is more cost and environment friendly are some of the key advantages.
CPFL Energia engineering director Evaldo Baldin stated: “In partnership with Siemens, our goal is to proactively meet future regulatory demands and optimise the power grid to support the energy transition.
“The implementation of smart meters will bring a new, more transparent, connected and higher-quality consumer experience. By digitalising the grid, we will be able to optimise processes and improve efficiency and operational management.”
Siemens turns to its Gridscale X Meter Data Management system in the smart meters project, ensuring a secure quality of electricity for up to 400,000 customers a year.
With the ability to work with sizable amounts of data, the system provides key insights into energy consumption trends.
It ensures accurate billing via automatic validation and data quality, enabling rate plans that are tailored and proactive energy usage stabilisation.
The system provides better loss detection, device management and improved integration with utilities’ operations.
Machine learning helps it facilitate fraud identification, costs optimisation and service interruptions reduction, while being designed to integrate with ERP and other applications.
Siemens Grid Software CEO Sabine Erlinghagen stated: “Digitalisation is vital to creating a sustainable and resilient energy future. Using Siemens’ technology, CPFL Energia will be able to improve its operational efficiency, as well as offer economic benefits and a reliable energy supply to household consumers.
“The implementation of smart meters not only improves grid management, but also significantly contributes to reducing carbon emissions.”
In September 2024, Siemens acquired US-based Trayer Engineering, which provides medium voltage secondary distribution switchgear, for its grid modernisation portfolio.
