The German government intends to develop 50 GW of installed offshore wind energy capacity by 2035, above its initial target of 40 GW.
Berlin plans to offer 4 GW of offshore wind energy capacity each year starting in 2027 in order to meet this objective.
An offshore wind accord was reached by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), Bremen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, and Schleswig-Holstein, as well as transmission system operators TenneT, 50 Hertz, and Amprion. The agreement also revealed grandiose ambitions.
The new agreement modifies the one from 2020 to take into account the greater expansion plans decided earlier this year. By the end of this decade, Germany hopes to have 30 GW of offshore wind, and by 2045, it wants to have 70 GW.
Robert Habeck, the economy minister, described the deal as a solid collective commitment to the 30-GW target by 2030. It includes a strategy for the required collaboration and the resources required to expedite the approval processes, as well as measures for identifying areas at sea, ecologically friendly development, specific timeframes and milestones.
