UAE based developer AMEA Power has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) with The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC). EETC will purchase clean energy generated by a 200MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project and a 500MW wind power project in Egypt.
AMEA Power chairman Hussain Al Nowais said: “As we continue to expand our global presence, we are delighted to embark on these renewable energy projects in Egypt.
“We are thankful for all the support that we have received in the country and we look forward to continuing to support Egypt in its drive to diversify its energy mix.”
The 200MW solar plant will be built and operated by Abyodos Solar Power Company (ASPC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of AMEA Power in the Kom Ombo region of Aswan. The terms of the take-or-pay agreement for the solar project is 25 years.
AMEA Power’s subsidiary Amunet Wind Power Company (AWPC) in the Ras Ghareb area will build and operate the 500MW windfarm. The energy generated by the windfarm will be sold to EETC under the 20-year take-or-pay agreement.
The solar facility is expected to begin its commercial operations by the fourth quarter of 2021, while the windfarm is expected to become operational in Q3 2023.
Once operational, the two facilities will have the capacity to generate nearly 2.9GWh per year, which will be sufficient to power nearly 830,000 homes in the region.
The renewable projects developed by AMEA’s subsidiaries are expected to support Egypt’s target of increasing the renewables contribution by 42% to its energy mix by 2035.
In November 2019 AMEA Power signed a PPA with La Compagnie Energie Electrique du Togo (CEET), a national utility company of the West African country Togo, for a 50MW solar PV project.
